African-inspired clothing and accessories are being more and more included in ready-to-wear collections of renowned fashion houses such as Louboutin’s and Stella Jean’s.
Or specially tailored for big stars like Rihanna or Beyoncé.
This new trend places Africa at the forefront of the Fashion Scene. So what a great time to think about slowly adding this magic touch to your wardrobe! You will be secretly looked at and envied for your authentic and super fabulous style!
In the first part of our series, we are showing you 3 great ways to add an African Touch to your Style:
1. The hair : Afro, Cornrows, or some ethnic hairstyle. You choose.
For your hair to look African, it needs to bring memories of natural hairstyles associated with women of African descent. Hairstyles that are also way better on kinky hair. As a matter of fact, even if you don’t have anything African in your wardrobe, rocking an Afro or some cornrows will skyrocket you to African swagger in an instant! It’s really all you need.
2. African print clothes
Even if you are from African descent but have never been to the Motherland, wearing this will automatically make you look motherlandish by absolutely everyone. These little fabrics are that powerful. You can choose a western-style cloth or go full-blown African. Either will do.
3. African print accessories
If you are thinking of wearing an accessory to complement your western attire and attain superbness, they are great options too. It could be a cool bag or a fancy pair of shoes. Just make sure your whole outfit doesn’t look too carnavalesque… Well, unless you’re ready to hit New Orleans’ mardi gras of course!
For extra added chicness and durability, opt for a mix of fabrics and artisanal leather.
This is the end of this first part.
I’ve tried and tested some of these tips on Canadian streets and received many compliments. Here I am on an early fall day in my ankara skirt.
